SALA Founding Member - Kit Hoh

Hello, I am Kit Hoh, founder of SALA. My family and I migrated to Melbourne in 1987 from Malaysia. I was born into a Mandarin and Hokkien speaking family, and was trained as an English Secondary School teacher. Progressively, I developed a passion for the Chinese language and its culture.

In late 1993, we approached the Principal of Caufield Grammar School, Mr Stephen Newton, to start a language school within the school campus. Mr Stephen was very supportive of our initiative and with his blessing, the Society for Asian Language and Arts (SALA) was established in 1994. The founding committee consisted of parents, staff and friends of Caulfield Grammar School.

The main objective of our organisation is not only to promote, but to ensure the continuity of Mandarin learning by both young and old. To foster a strong sense of community, the school also aims to create an awareness of Chinese culture and traditions, using various mediums, including arts, music, dance and food.

The SALA curriculum caters students from both native and non-native Mandarin backgrounds. Our curriculum facilitates students' learning up to V.C.E ( Victorian School of education) level and it continues to be reviewed and updated to meet the needs of our students.

The committee and staff welcome all, and we are here to provide a learning platform for all those interested to learn a new language.
